Made in the USA
This page is my thoughts on the last few years of “Made in the USA” being a true statement.
We all know that the USA has changed over the years from a country based on agriculture to an industrial nation based on manufacturing. We are now in the process of changing to an information and service economy.
As one of the few remaining craftsmen that take raw materials and creates products that are built to last for many years, if not a lifetime, I find these changes we are going through to be a bit upsetting to say the least.
No longer can Americans go to their local fabric store and purchase material that is made in this country. We can no longer purchase things made here like telephones, televisions, radios, computers, calculators or just about any product using electronics. The days of the US auto manufactures are numbered and the list goes on and on.
Last year, the last remaining tannery that produced leather for the belt and shoe manufacturing trades closed their doors. There used to be manufactures of those products here to support several tanneries, but their time has passed. As more and more companies move to off shore production and the sales of imports increases we see the loss of age old talent that will never be replaced.
As someone that still produces products in this country I can say that I’m saddened by these events, but I will continue to make my living making leather products.
